いくたびも

あはれみ深く

奥ぞ教ふる

【Meaning】

The person who has high will profoundly is

often taught interior by the affection of master.

(To tell the truth, some of words are untranslatable, so this translation result is slightly better than rubbish.)

The reason why I have good feeling in this poetry is that "Will" expresses instead of "It is high", "It is profound". I think that this is the expression to which Japanese essence is indicated. Maybe this expression was used in old times.

The kanji of 志(kokorozasi, high will) consists of the part of 士(samurai) and 心(heart). This kanji is one of the kanjis that I like. By the way, this kanji seems to be one of the concepts that there is not for English. The equivalent which seems to be the nearest to this kanji with a Japanese-English dictionary "high will." Because Will is equivalents such as the volition / determination, it is the impression why I am honest that this equivalent does not graze in a concept of "志".

Unfortunately the height of the sense that a kanji brings on shines in this example. "It is profound" is used for "Consideration" and "Love", etc.

This is the expression that the heart of Senno Rikyu(千利休) seems to be handed down to.

"あはれ, aware" is representative expressing the essence of the Japanese heart, but this is the description expression that there is not for English. The used "あわれ, aware" is limited to a "pity" meaning today. However, it was used in the meaning of more wide senses in old days. This word is a word of the sense not translated into English easily.

There is an equivalent called "pathos" in my dictionary as a philosophy term, but probably this will not be a general word. I feel that it is emotional more far than the English term used in a translation as for Japanese "あわれ, aware".

By the way, the standard is used for "deep" as for the word(あわれみぶかく). But in this poem, I felt that "affection" is most suitable word.

It is written, "interior" in this poetry. However, it is interpreted by note, "Teach in detail". In English, "interior" means sometime mental inside.

I'm not sure about the relationship between "detail" and "interior".

The principle of the Bugei is "stealing".

The traditional arts seem not to have been taught carefully in old days.

Not the martial arts having been best as for it, most traditional arts seem to have looked like it.

There is the reason in various ways, but the Japanese is sake not to trust tradition by the language instinctively that the disciple develops the power of observation is regarded as important by the traditional arts.

The policy is different according to the sect. However, it is believed that it is far more important to support the observation eyes than knowledge in the word.

"あはれみ" fed an observing eye and had better think with kindness to acquire own scholastic ability.

It cannot have been the easy thing which led a seeker after truth to the secret by any means.

The thoughts seem to be considerably different to be concrete by a sect or master.

It is taught the techniques very carefully in a certain sect. Even if the master shows the reason 100%, the reason is because the disciple can understand only 10% to the utmost.

In addition, the master teaches only a minimum thing in another sect. It is just "steal it".

I think that the teaching may change it depending on the character of the disciple, progress condition, contents.

My grand master often says "The technique is trivial matter".

I do not think that there is such a big difference if I similarly teach the progress of the technique to the person of a similar physique though it is thought that there are various ways to catch for this word.

When it faced a situation that a difference came out.

Then, "The technique was taught" or "Taught in the technique" is obvious for the first time and it comes.

I think the words of the grandmaster to have possibilities to be such a meaning.

It is poetry to want a person to teach it to to savor it deeply by all means.
